SHIPIBO PEOPLES - Agricultural Equipment Purchases

SAN FRANCISCO, PUCALLPA, Peru

Purpose: Agricultural Equipment Purchases

Start Date: July, 2012

Funding Level: $4,000

Lives Directly Impacted: 1,000

SUMMARY

Inti Raymi Fund visited Peru and provided financial support for the Indigenous Shipibo Peoples, facilitating their purchase of farming equipment, and supporting their collective farming practices for produce. In addition, the we established a “Fair Trade arrangement" whereby our foundation purchases the Shipibo beadwork bracelets at fair market retail prices. Bracelets are used as special gifts for friends and clients of the Inti Raymi Fund to reveal how special the Shipibo Indigenous Art is.

FARMING EQUIPMENT PURCHASE AND FAIR TRADE JEWELRY FOR INTI RAYMI FUND

At the request of the Shipibo Peoples, the Inti Raymi Fund purchased equipment and tools to increase farming efficiency, allowing the community to attain better fair-market prices in the markets of Pucallpa, Peru. We provided funding for the expansion of their agricultural trade and community collective bargaining in the Shipibo communities of San Francisco and Yarinacocha. This agricultural Project allows the Shipibo Peoples to take greater control of the agricultural products they sell, and increases their yield per acre.

Additionally, the Inti Raymi Fund orders hundreds and hundreds of hand-made, Shipibo bracelets from their communities. They are the Inti Raymi Funds’ gift to help spread awareness of the beauty of Indigenous Peoples’ cultures and art.   We pay full market price for each bracelet, pay for the river canoe transportation, the tuk-tuk delivery to the shipping offices, plus packaging.  We employ numerous people during the process of this fair trade transaction. In the end, we give these special bracelets to special people from the Inti Raymi Fund.
