QUELICAI PEOPLES - Sponsorship to Attend Santa Fe Int'l Folk Art Festival

DILI, Timor Leste

Purpose: Sponsorship to Attend Santa Fe Int'l Folk Art Festival

Start Date: July, 2013

Funding Level: $25,000

Lives Directly Impacted: 50

SUMMARY

Inti Raymi Fund provided financial support for Indigenous Quelicai artists to attend the annual Santa Fe International Folk Art Festival. This Festival attracts over 20,000 attendees over the three day weekend, allowing Indigenous artists from around the world the opportunity to sell a years’ worth of art at one time, which often supports their community for a year. Additionally, this sales exposure to western retailers facilitates wholesale-retail relationships which can bring villages out of poverty. (cover image by others)

QUELICAI TEXTILE ARTIST PROJECT

The Inti Raymi Fund helped to support an entire community of Timor Leste textile weavers.  The sales from these handmade textiles not only sustained them, but also ensured the preservation and continuation of this nearly extinct handcraft in their part of the world. Timor-Leste, officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, is a country in Maritime Southeast Asia that comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, the nearby islands of Atauro and Jaco, and Oecusse, an exclave on the northwestern side of the island, within Indonesian West Timor. The local weavings from the Quelicai Weavers Association, support the community through the sales of their hand craft products.  We sponsored their attendance at the annual Santa Fe International Folk Art Festival held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA.

WHY DID THE INTI RAYMI FUND SUPPORT THIS?

During this festival roughly 120 artists display their crafts from approximately 60 countries.  The attendance from folk art collectors and retailers is usually 20,000 during this three-day event.  At this time, vendors arrive with the entire community’s art, which they created during the immediate months preceding the event.  The annual sales of this event alone can be sufficient to sustain their entire community for a year.  In addition to the direct sales procured at this event, it is a wonderful opportunity for these artisans to gain valuable knowledge on wholesale and retail relationships during training seminars during the week preceding the market sales days. Lastly, due to direct exposure, these communities of artisans have a valuable opportunity to connect with many retail shop owners who come to the festival to establish a wholesale/retail relation abroad. This event promotes a unique cultural experience for all that come.

HOW INTI RAYMI FUND HELPED

The Inti Raymi Fund supported these artisans and their communities by financing the following with $12,000:

• Booth fees

• Training seminars

• Product shipment

• Airfares, lodging, meals etc. of the participating artists

• In addition to the $12,000 contributed for the artists attendance and training at the 2013 Festival, Inti Raymi also provided $13,000 of funds directly into the artists hands during the 2017 Folk Art Festival.

Help preserve the diversity of our cultures throughout the globe and attend the International Folk Art Market.

The Inti Raymi Fund has attended the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market on multiple occasions; however, we have not visited Timor Leste yet. GPS Pin was placed in close proximity to community workshop.
