GREENLAND'S INUIT PEOPLES - Community Center Improvements

LLULISSAT, GREENLAND, Denmark - Greenland

Purpose: Community Center Improvements

Start Date: June 2016

Funding Level: $25,000

Lives Directly Impacted: 84

SUMMARY

Inti Raymi Fund visited Greenland and provided financial support for the Indigenous Inuit Peoples Community of Llimanaq, Greenland. This remote fishing community of 84 inhabitants spend their entire freezing winters in 24 hours of darkness. Our funds were used to mitigate the negative impacts of winter isolation and darkness by supporting the renovation of their community center as well as the purchase of new furniture, entertainment equipment and kitchen equipment. These improvements will all help facilitate the continued cultural and emotional survival among the locals.

WHAT THE INTI RAYMI FUND PROVIDED

The Inti Raymi Fund provided $25,000 into the small fishing village of Llimanaq, near Llulissat, Greenland. These funds will be used to renovate and furnish amenities for the entire village of approximately 84 people to help them emotional endure their harsh winters with 24 hours of darkness.

Socialization during their long winter days & nights is very important and having a furnished community center with updated cooking equipment, television & media equipment, board games along with new tables and chairs, will play a real positive affect for years to come on the community as a whole.

The Inti Raymi Fund became aware of the Intuit Peoples and their issues for survival during our annual attendance of the conferences at the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. We met Ane-Maria Petersen at the conference in 2015, a very socially responsible young journalist from this region of Greenland.  Ane-Maria joined us from Nuuk, Greenland where she was attending university.  Ane-Maria was very helpful as a translator as well as a friend helping us, help the Inuit Peoples of Greenland.
