SEXUAL VIOLENCE COUNSELING - Trauma and Healing After the Fact

Since establishment, Stígamót has been gathering and analyzing statistics about the individuals who seek services at the center. This data has been crucial for further development of services and devising strategies for increased public awareness and effective political advocacy. In the last few years the center has, for example, increased its focus on improving outreach and services for persons with disabilities, male survivors, members of the LGBTQ community, migrants and individuals who live in rural areas. Last year saw one of the biggest increases in attendance numbers since the establishment of the center.

In 2017, there were 969 individuals (women and men) who came in for counselling, of which 453 were survivors who were coming for the first time. Overall, the center provided 3,091 individual counseling sessions. Since inception, the center has counseled roughly 8,500 people in need.

The Inti Raymi Fund grant will help provide individual counselling sessions for at least 50 individuals, amounting to roughly 200 sessions.  This funding will be used first and foremost for individual interview services, but will indirectly also contribute to the other services, which include self-help groups, online services, services for rural areas, prevention education projects focused on youth, trainings for different sectors and various projects engaging men in combating violence against women.
