GENEVA, Switzerland

Purpose: Youth Attendance Support

Start Date: June, 2015

Funding Level: $25,000

Lives Directly Impacted: 8

SUMMARY

Inti Raymi Fund visited Switzerland on a previous trip, then provided financial support into the Switzerland based non-profit organization called International Organization of Indigenous Peoples Centre for Documentation, Research and Information (“DOCIP”). With our contribution, DOCIP arranged the attendance of eight international youth delegates to attend their annual human rights conference in Geneva Switzerland. These socially responsible youth gained additional knowledge as well as gaining an increased sense of responsibility in the world.

HUMAN RIGHTS CONFERENCE SUPPORTING YOUTH ATTENDANCE THROUGH DOCIP

The Inti Raymi Fund supported a Human Rights Indigenous Peoples Conference in Switzerland on June 16, 2015.  This conference is among many provided by the International Organization of Indigenous Peoples Centre for Documentation, Research and Information (“DOCIP”), based in Geneva Switzerland. Their core activities are the organization and facilitation of these conferences along with supporting the United Nations World Conferences on Indigenous Peoples Issues in New York. The Inti Raymi Funds’ financial support allowed 8 motivated Human Rights Youth to attend this conference, allowing their participation and hence furthering their enthusiasm in the Human Rights Profession.

DECLARATION ON THE RIGHTS OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES

The United Nations Declaration for the Rights of Indigenous Peoples was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly during its 61st session at UN Headquarters in New York City on 13 September 2007.

While as a General Assembly Declaration it is not a legally binding instrument under international law, according to a UN press release, it does “represent the dynamic development of international legal norms and it reflects the commitment of the UN’s member states to move in certain directions”; the UN describes it as setting “an important standard for the treatment of Indigenous Peoples that will undoubtedly be a significant tool towards eliminating human rights violations against the planet’s 370 million indigenous people and assisting them in combating discrimination and marginalization.

UNDRIP which codifies “Indigenous historical grievances, contemporary challenges and socio-economic, political and cultural aspirations” is a “culmination of generations-long efforts by Indigenous Organizations to get international attention, to secure recognition for their aspirations, and to generate support for their political agendas.”

The Inti Raymi Fund became aware of this Human Rights Conference through our relationships with the DOCIP Organization while attending the World Conference of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. The Inti Raymi Fund provided a $25,000 Grant into DOCIP for the above aforementioned Human Rights Project.
